A "reluctant heart" is a heart that has stopped beating, but sometimes will start again under certain circumstances. A "reluctant heart" can be shocked twice to get the heart beating again. The reason doctors have to shock it twice is that the first shock, sometimes called a defibrillation shock, doesn't always work. Sometimes, the heart just needs a little more time to get back into working order.
